Science North Launches Interactive Exhibit on Illusions
Science North in Sudbury has launched its latest exhibit, PHEMOMENA, which delves into the captivating world of illusions. Open until April 30, 2024, this interactive display invites visitors to explore the ways in which perception can be deceived.
Ashley Larose, CEO of Science North, emphasized the exhibit’s hands-on nature, stating, “It is highly interactive, which we know our visitors love.” She noted that PHEMOMENA offers a fresh approach compared to previous exhibits, aiming to engage both the minds and bodies of guests. The goal is to ignite curiosity about the science behind illusions, making for a memorable experience.
The exhibit features a total of 20 illusions, one of which showcases an apparent giant Ashley Larose standing beside progressively smaller guests. This illusion exemplifies how visual perception can be manipulated, a theme echoed throughout the exhibit. According to Bruce Doran, a Science North bluecoat, “It’s talking about how your perception may be fooled by these different exhibits and explains how that works.”
Visitors can expect to engage with various illusions that challenge their sensory interpretations. The exhibit also explores how the brain processes information from the eyes, ears, and other senses, providing insights into cognitive functions.
Timed perfectly for Family Day on February 16 and the upcoming March Break, Science North anticipates a significant influx of visitors. The centre expects tens of thousands of guests to experience the wonders of PHEMOMENA before it concludes at the end of April.
For those interested in learning more about this captivating exhibit, additional information is available on the Science North website.
