Durham Police Pursue Second Suspect in Oshawa Stabbing Death

Durham police have arrested one suspect and are actively searching for another in connection with a fatal stabbing that marks the region’s ninth homicide of the year. The incident occurred early on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at approximately 04:15 in Oshawa, specifically at the intersection of Park Road South and John Street.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered a man, later identified as Jeremy Russel, 44, suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was quickly transported to a trauma centre in Toronto but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

In the wake of this tragedy, police have charged Nicholas Robbins, 33, also from Oshawa, with second-degree murder. According to the Durham Regional Police Service, Robbins and Russel were known to each other, as was the second suspect, Michael Waterman, 44. Authorities have classified Waterman as armed and dangerous.

Ongoing Search and Additional Charges

The search for Waterman has expanded beyond Oshawa. He is also wanted by the Peterborough Police Service in connection with a separate homicide that occurred on December 6, 2023, resulting in the death of a 33-year-old man. This makes Waterman a suspect in two second-degree murder cases, one in Durham Region and another in Peterborough.

The police are urging anyone with information regarding Waterman’s whereabouts to come forward. They have stated that anyone assisting him in evading arrest could face charges under the Criminal Code of Canada.
