Winnipeg Police Seek Community Support After Synagogue Vandalism

Vandals defaced the front doors of Winnipeg’s Shaarey Zedek synagogue with red swastikas and hate-filled messages on January 2, 2026. The incident, identified by local authorities as a suspected hate crime, has sparked widespread condemnation and concern across the city. Winnipeg Police are urging residents to report suspicious activities and cooperate with ongoing investigations.

The graffiti was discovered early on the morning of January 2 by maintenance staff. Security footage captured an individual, identifiable by a baseball cap and coat, committing the act at approximately 04:30. The suspect reportedly threw a bag onto the synagogue property from a nearby bridge after vandalizing the building.

In the aftermath, the Shaarey Zedek congregation received an outpouring of support from local leaders, including Manitoba’s Premier, Winnipeg’s Mayor, the Lieutenant Governor, and interfaith leaders. Rabbi Carnie Rose expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by the community, stating that the large turnout for Sabbath services demonstrated resilience in the face of intimidation.

Despite the support, some Jewish leaders have called for stronger enforcement of existing hate crime laws and the urgent appointment of a new special envoy on antisemitism, a position vacant since July 2025. Rabbi Rose emphasized the need for community action, urging individuals to refrain from vigilante responses and instead report any information to the police.

Inspector Jennifer McKinnon of the Winnipeg Police Major Crimes Unit reinforced the importance of community involvement. “We cannot be casual bystanders for incidents like this. We are requesting, if you have any information regarding these occurrences, that you report it to the Winnipeg Police Service,” she stated during a media briefing.

The antisemitic graffiti incident is not an isolated occurrence, as Jewish leaders noted a troubling trend of escalating hate crimes in Winnipeg. Belle Jarniewski, a Holocaust educator and director of the newly established Manitoba Institute to Combat Antisemitism, remarked on the increase in antisemitic graffiti throughout the city. “This is part of a larger pattern of intimidation and hatred against the Jewish community,” Jarniewski noted.

In light of these events, the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg has announced plans to enhance security around local Jewish institutions. Police have committed to increasing patrols in the area and developing security measures for upcoming community events.

As the investigation continues, authorities have not ruled out connections to broader patterns of hate incidents in the region.
