Mariupol Theatre Reopens After Reconstruction Following Siege

A theatre in Mariupol, Ukraine, symbolizing the devastation of the city’s siege by Russian forces in 2022, has reopened after a significant redevelopment. The reopening ceremony took place on Sunday, featuring performances from artists in both Mariupol and Saint Petersburg, Russia. The event was broadcast on Russian television, showcasing the theatre’s restored marble staircase, columns, and an impressive 2.5-tonne crystal chandelier in the auditorium.

During the early months of 2022, Russian forces laid siege to Mariupol, a key city along the Black Sea coast. The siege lasted almost three months, resulting in widespread destruction and significant loss of life. According to Human Rights Watch, approximately 8,000 people died during this period, while the city’s exiled municipal council reported up to 22,000 fatalities. Notably, Amnesty International stated that at least 12 people lost their lives in the bombing of the theatre itself.

The once-thriving city of Mariupol, home to around 540,000 residents before the conflict, suffered immense destruction. The United Nations reported that 90 percent of the city’s buildings were either damaged or destroyed during the siege. Following the conflict, approximately 300,000 residents fled, leaving a significant impact on the community.

Denis Pushilin, the pro-Russian leader of the Donetsk region, announced the theatre’s reopening, highlighting the restoration of its “historic image” alongside the installation of advanced modern equipment. Pushilin emphasized that the theatre has reopened its doors to spectators after a three-year redevelopment effort.

The restoration project received considerable support from Saint Petersburg, with Alexander Beglov, the governor of the city, stating that they contributed workers and architects to assist in the rebuilding efforts. Beglov attended the reopening, which attracted an audience of about 500, and described the project as “a question of honour.”

In September 2022, Russia formally announced the annexation of four Ukrainian regions, including Donetsk, despite not fully controlling these areas. The reopening of the theatre marks a significant milestone for Russian authorities, who aim to reshape Mariupol’s image into one of prosperity in the territories they control.
