Newborn Found in Shoebox at Toronto Church; Mother Located
A newborn baby was discovered in a shoebox at St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Toronto on March 3, 2024. Parishioners were startled to hear the sound of a baby crying just before the 11 a.m. mass. Upon investigation, they found the infant on a shelf near the second-floor bathroom of the church.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene. The baby was transported to the Hospital for Sick Children for medical care. Toronto Police confirmed that they received a call regarding the found child in the Yonge St. and Broadview Ave. area around 10:40 a.m. A spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service stated, “A newborn baby was located and taken to hospital. The baby’s mother has also been located. Both are receiving care.”
In a poignant twist, the church’s namesake, Saint Monica, is recognized as the patron saint of mothers, providing a touch of comfort in this unusual situation.
The Hospital for Sick Children, known as SickKids, stated they could not disclose specific patient information due to privacy regulations.
Legal Framework for Abandoning Infants
In Toronto, there are legal provisions in place for parents in crisis. Authorities indicate that parents can safely drop off their newborns at hospitals without facing legal repercussions, provided they are not implicated in any wrongdoing. Under Canadian law, it is a criminal offense to abandon a child under the age of 10 in a manner that could jeopardize their health or safety, punishable by up to five years in prison.
For parents experiencing distress, the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto offers 24/7 support, encouraging individuals to reach out for assistance. Additionally, Legal Aid Ontario provides legal counsel for matters related to child protection.
Efforts to contact St. Monica’s Catholic Church for further comment have not yet yielded a response.
This incident raises awareness about the importance of support systems available for parents in difficulty, emphasizing the need for community resources in times of crisis.
